Studio Sessions Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, absolutely! You set the price and we add a fee for our services.
Seasoned creatives or anyone passionate about learning and developing new creative skills go on a studio session.
For them, each studio session is an opportunity to make, learn, and explore. This is their time to immerse in a living artist’s practice and local culture, slow down, learn new skills, and find fresh inspiration. By coming together with you, as a master artist, they are also taking a stance to help preserve the joyous and sacred tradition of the master-student apprenticeship.
Families, best friends, or partners can also choose to do a studio session together.
The ideal length of time depends entirely on how long your craft takes to teach the entire process and how many iterations of your craft you want your students to try their hands at. Studio Sessions typically last anything from 30 minutes -10 days.
All studio sessions are tailored to the guest's interests and level of experience.
For example, you could be teaching someone how to engage with your art form for the first time, or helping a part-time artist take their skills to the next level, or perhaps collaborating on a project with a collector. Possibilities are endless!
There are, and we can talk through them with you, but mostly they are the following:
- You must have your own studio or access to a studio space that can easily welcome 1-4 guests, and
- You must have time to host between 1- 4 studio sessions per year.
Logistically, these are the base-level qualifications.
That’s exactly what we’re here for. You’re not just in good company with the other studio session artists, our team will support you every step of the way to set up you, your studio session, and your guests for success.
To make this process easy for you and seamless for guests, the Collectors of African Art team helps you manage your studio sessions -- from helping you create your experiences, and your artist page, managing your schedule and availability, to taking care of all bookings and communication with guests.
Once you’ve applied, we’ll review your application. If we think you are a good fit to join as a studio session Artist, we'll notify you to schedule a call so we can learn more about you and tell you more about the studio session. (Fair warning, we are a small team so this may take a few weeks.)
If we then decide to move forward with your application, we'll work with you to create your studio session page and offer the absolute best experience possible!

We are taking every possible precaution to create a safe space for our guests and artists to come together. To ensure your health and well-being, we’re implementing the following safety measures:
Private Experience: Each session is a private experience and will be limited to you and/or a group of 5 people max, plus the artist.
Covid-19 Screening: Screening is required for both artist and participants prior to experience.
Masks: All artists and participants must wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines.
Sanitizing: Every artist will provide access to sink and soap for regular hand washing.
Studio Cleaning: Tools and work areas will be sanitized at the beginning and end of each work period, and shared tools will be sanitized throughout the work period.
Ventilation: Spaces will be ventilated when possible (based on specific space and weather).
Health Restrictions: We are closely following health updates. If a session has to be cancelled due to updated travel restrictions in regards to Covid-19, we will assess whether it is best to reschedule or cancel the session. In the event of rescheduling, you will be offered a chance to move your booking to the new date or receive a full refund. If a session is cancelled, you will receive a full refund.
